Study Overview:

In Canada, we are experiencing an unprecedented increase in climate-related weather events. Older people are particularly vulnerable during these events, especially those living in long-term care homes (LTCHs; alternatively referred to as nursing homes), due to advanced health issues and functional dependence on staff.

Nurses have a central role in caring for older people living in LTCHs during climate-related weather events, yet we were unable to find qualitative studies that reported on these experiences. To address this knowledge gap, the aim of our study is to improve understanding of nurses’ experiences of caring for older people who live in LTCHs during climate-related weather events in order to make recommendations for policies and practices.

Study Update: We have completed data collection and are currently doing data analysis. Check back soon for updates on our findings.

Poster recruiting for a new study entitled Nurses Experiences of Caring for Older People during climate-related weather events in Canadian long-term care homes.
The study is looking to learn about the experiences of nurses and the strategies they use when caring for residents during climate-related weather events.
Who can participate? We are looking for nurses including licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, and registered psychiatric nurses who also work in long-term care homes and have cared for residents during climate related weather events.
What will you be asked to do? You will participate in an interview with a research team member via zoom. The interview will last about one hour. You will also complete a demographic form.
Dr. Jennifer Baumbusch is leading this study.
